A chunky hat with a matching cowl. Using chunky yarn, this pattern works up quickly. The strand of lace weight mohair gives the hat and cowl a funky marled effect.

NOTES
  • US abbreviations
  • Difficulty Level: Advanced Beginner
  • Before commencing the pattern, ensure you work a swatch in order to meet gauge. You may need to substitute the recommended hook size.
  • This pattern is worked using two strands of yarn held together - one strand of bulky, and one strand of lace weight. You may substitute equivalent yarns to achieve the desired effect. I have included the measurement for a gauge swatch worked using DC, to make it easier to check your own gauge if substituting yarn.
  • There is 6cm of negative ease in the hat. It is designed to be worn with the brim folded 10cm and the crown is close fitting. If you prefer a slouchy hat, you can wear it with the brim unfolded.
  • This pattern can be adjusted to suit a smaller or larger head circumference by reducing or increasing the number of rows worked.
  • CH2 at beginning of each round counts as a DC.
  • If you are working this pattern in the same colour throughout, there will be no RS and WS so please disregard the instructions regarding this. If you are choosing to do stripes, you determine which side you prefer as the RS and WS and follow the instructions applicable to this.
  • If you are not familiar with the BLO stitch, there's a great tutorial here - https://youtu.be/pAcladDO54E Just remember to CH2 at the start of each row, not CH3 as explained in the video

Let's get started!

HAT

Using 6.5mm crochet hook, hold both yarns together and CH 35.

Row 1 - DC in 3rd CH from hook. DC in each CH to end. CH2, turn. (34)

Remember that the CH2 at the start of each row counts as a ST. So you will be working your first DCBLO into the next unworked ST, not in the same ST as the turning CH.

Row 2-24 - DCBLO in next ST, DCBLO in each ST to end. CH2, turn. (34)
Row 25 - DCBLO in next ST, DCBLO in each ST to end. Turn. (34)

With RS facing fold piece in half with first and last rows together. CH1, SL ST in BLO of each piece. Fasten off.
CROWN
We are now going to gather the crown of the hat. Cut a 40cm length of yarn and thread through a darning needle.

Insert needle under the last DC of a row as shown, and weave the yarn under and over each DC along the whole piece.
Gather Crown Crochet Hat
Pull yarn to gather the crown. Tie both ends of yarn together to secure. Weave in all ends.

Turn the hat RS out and fold the brim up 10cm.

Your hat is now complete!

COWL

Using 6.5mm crochet hook, hold both yarns together and CH 34.

Row 1 - DC in 3rd CH from hook. DC in each CH to end. CH2, turn. (33)

Remember that the CH2 at the start of each row counts as a ST. So you will be working your first DCBLO into the next unworked ST, not in the same ST as the turning CH.

Row 2-39 - DCBLO in next ST, DCBLO in each ST to end. CH2, turn. (33)
Row 40 - DCBLO in next ST, DCBLO in each ST to end. Turn. (33)

With RS facing, fold piece in half with first and last rows together. CH1, SL ST in BLO of each piece. Fasten off. Weave in ends. Turn RS out.

Your cowl is now complete!
